Interview with a bro episode 5
@MindMusclePro
Q: How did you discover this twitter subculture and who were the first people you become a fan of?
A: I have been using Twitter since 2013, well just following a few Celebrities & friends. I don’t remember exactly how i discovered this corner of twitter, might have been from reddit. The first few accounts that i became a fan of were @Edlatimore, @Aja_cortes & Illimitable man (Now @TellYourSonThis). But the account that really inspired me was someone called James maverick (no longer on twitter. Check out his website https://mavericktraveler.com/). He quit his job in silicon valley & became a digital nomad. That showed me possibilities, which i never thought of before.
Q: What made you interested in health ? Were there any figures that actually helped you in this journey?
A: Being bullied in school is what pushed me to join a gym, that was in 2010 as a 15 year old. But that was never about health to be honest, i just wanted to be big & strong. That continued for a year and half. Made a lot of mistakes back then, you know only training chest & arms etc. Fast forward a few year to 2017 i just passed out of college & i was a fat piece of shit. But that never bothered me. What really made me interested in health was when my dad suffered a stroke in 2017. It was a shock to me. He was reasonably active, not overweight person. So i had that moment where i realised if a seemingly healthy person (atleast on the outside) like my dad could face a health crisis, an overweight person like me had no chance. So i took it on myself to understand about diet & nutrition. What i discovered was that everything you have been taught in school & what doctors tell you are utter bullshit. Food pyramid, Saturated fat causing heart problems and all that crap. Endocrinologist advised my dad a type 2 diabetes patient to have multiple small meals during the day. Can you believe that? An insulin resistant person eating throughout the day is a death wish. By then i gained some basic understanding of health & nutrition & started working out (cycling, swimming etc). I was hesitant on weight training then. It was only in march 2020 i started lifting again. Been lifting consistently since then & training some lads too. I don’t really have any figures in Health industry, i can only think of John meadows (mountaindog on youtube) & Dr cate shehnahan (author of Deep Nutrition).
Q: What do you wish you knew sooner when it comes to training and nutrition?
A:There are a lot of things i wish i knew earlier about training & nutrition. Like emphasising on working the Posterior chain, Bulking doesn't mean eating any crap you get your hands on etc. If i had to say one thing, i would say that Diet is more important than training. People especially newbies don't realize that.
Q: What do you wish you realized sooner when it comes to life?
A: One thing i wish i realized about life earlier is that nobody has all the answers. Everybody has their demons they are fighting against. Your problems are not special & the world is not conspiring against you. You cannot be successful if you think that you are wronged by the world. I believe that is the problem with woke people. They don’t want to face their problems, they wanna project their problems to something externally & feel better their themselves.
Q: Favourite meal?
A: Favourite meal is anything with Eggs. I just love eggs. If there was an eggs only diet, i reckon i would do just fine. Steak, Fish & Cottage cheese are up there too.
Q : Which supplements have helped you the most and what’s in your house right now?
A: I’m not a huge fan of supplements. But a few have worked for me. Whey isolate & creatine for workouts, Magnesium glycinate for general health, Ashwagandha & Mucuna pruriens as T boosters. I don’t use fish oil anymore (I live on the coast & eat lots of fish), also have used Shilajit. Both of these are also highly recommended.
Q: If you could only recommend 3 books to your 18 year old self , which ones would they be (and maybe why)?
A: The 3 books I would give to my 18 year self are Deep Nutrition by Dr Cate Shehnahan, Mastery by Robert Greene & Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. As for why, these books touch all important aspects of life: Health, Wealth & Intelligence. You can't go wrong if you have these figured out. I really wanted to put “ Cant hurt me” by david goggins in there, but not sure how my 18 year self would react to it LOL.
Q: Why has masculinity today turned into rocket science?
A: Why has Masculinity turned into rocket science? Because they are trying to eliminate masculinity. They hate Masculinity. They want obedient soy boys. There is no need to do anything to make men masculine, we are masculine by default. They wanna mess with that, so they come up with stuff to demonize Masculinity. In fact i would say it’s not just Masculinity they are against, they hate feminity too. They hate nature. Emasculation of society worries me big time, especially what they are doing to kids. I have found some hope from this corner of twitter though. We should fight this.
Q: Could you share a challenge you've faced and shaped your perspective?
A: My whole childhood was full of Challenges. I was fat, broke & depressed. I was an over thinker, I stressed over the smallest things & made myself miserable. The biggest help for me at that stage was Stoicism. Stoic philosophy made me realise that you don't need to try & control everything in life. Some things are beyond our control & it’s best to not worry about them. Instead fully focus on the controllables in life. Like whether you get cancer or not is 100% in your control, but by taking care of your health you give yourself the best chance of not getting it in the first place. Another way stoicism helped me was through Negative visualization. This is basically when you mentally prepare for the worst case scenario, so when anything does happen you are more or less prepared. It’s hard, it’s not easy to practice stoicism, but you can live a better life if you follow some of its principles. By the way, I highly recommend “A Guide to the good life” by william irvine. Check it out.
Q: Gratitude is the attitude?
A: Ofcourse, Gratitude is everything. I would like to share a quote here “I cried because i had no shoes, then i met a man who had no feet”. This is the problem with a lot of people. They don’t realise what they have in life & instead complain about what they don’t have. Gratitude is something everyone should practice, just close your eyes for a moment & think of all the things you are grateful for. It’ll change your life.
I really enjoyed this brother.
Thank you.
